Air Rider Articles Air Rider HC3 Helmet Headset There are alot of us who remember when a radio or victrola was a luxury item. Now we have fine stereo systems, cell phones, televisions, and computers in our vehicles as well as in our homes. There was a time when we could barely understand what was being said over the pops and the crackles. Now we demand the clarity of a third row seat at Carnegie Hall. Just a few years ago it was radical to have a CB or AM/FM radio strapped to a motorcycle. This changed as fairings became larger, creating more places to put things with a more protected and comfortable environment. Wind tunnel tests enabled engineers to shape a nearly dead air envelope for the rider. In this same time period, motorcycle helmets were being greatly improved to provide more safety and comfort. However, there were still factors limiting good audio performance. The external speakers had to overcome sounds of the motor, road noise, and other traffic. There was also the problem of hand-held microphones requiring one band being removed from the handlebars for CB transmission. It was not long before helmet-mounted speakers and microphones, with push-to-talk switches, began to appear. It followed that if riders could hear better, they would demand better quality sound from their audio systems. Honda even marketed an add on combination unit under their company name. They and other motorcycle manufacturers soon began offering their touring bikes with factory installed AM/FM and CB radiom with external hookups. Small speakers, with limited response, and wind-sensitive microphones presented problems. Several companies were, and in my opinion, still are producing headsets that give marginally acceptable performance. Click
